FAQ on 18650 batteries (part 1)

Why 18650 batteries are so popular

The 18650 batteries in your e-cigarette are just like the ones in a Tesla electric car, the only difference is that the car gets its power from a huge battery compartment with a capacity of 1000 of these small batteries soldered together. Why? It’s quite simple. The 18650 is the perfect solution for anything that uses portable batteries, from power tools to laptop batteries. Undoubtedly, these batteries are perfect for vape devices as well, as they don’t require a lot of power like a Tesla. Some varivatts are equipped with two 18650 batteries, and many users are quite sufficient with just one.

Quality doesn’t mean expensive

In terms of price/quality, some of the best 18650 batteries on the market (at the time of writing) are recognized as LG and Panasonic. Other brands can cost more and are more likely to exceed the output current rating. Beware of such dangerous fakes! LG and Panasonic can offer their customers good quality batteries at a low price due to mass production. The 18650 has this property that it is profitable to produce them in monster quantities. That’s why Tesla has contracts with these manufacturers.

What is mAh(mAh)

The characteristic denoted mAh or mAh (milliampere-hour) defines the capacity of the battery and means how much charge the battery can hold. The number indicated on the package corresponds to the characteristic of a new battery and, unfortunately, the capacity decreases over time. Practice shows that brand name batteries lose capacity much more slowly than batteries made in the Chinese underground.

What is characteristic amp

The characteristic indicates how much current the battery can deliver per unit of time without changing the constant voltage. I.e. if it is stated that the battery is 20amp it means that it will be able to deliver a current of 20A(Ampere) for 30 seconds. There is also a designation of peak current for a few seconds. For example, a Samsung 25R can easily deliver 60amp for 10 seconds. Some unscrupulous companies intentionally confuse the characteristic designations in order to deceive the buyer.

How watts are calculated

For example, a fully charged 18650 battery produces 4V; this means a 20amp battery can deliver 80 watts of power. In mods with two batteries, the batteries are connected in series, so they will deliver 8V, which means 160Watts of power. Remember that the peak characteristic is much greater than the continuous characteristic, so a lot of batteries can be used for vaping, because one puff lasts only a couple of seconds.
